What to Consider when Shopping for Motorcycle Pants

Material and Stitching

Road rash is the most common type of motorcycle injury. This painful grazing can be reduced if you had abrasion-resistant material covering your lower regions, the area that most often comes in contact with the road. Motorcycle pants can be made from a variety of fabrics. Let’s take a look at some of the more common types.

First, let’s discuss how these fabrics are evaluated. Denier is the unit of measurement for the linear density of fibers, which gives you the weight of the thread rather than the strength. Heavy-weight fibers will have a larger Denier count.

Denim is a thick and sturdy cotton twill fabric. It has a rather low abrasion resistance, but will undoubtedly protect your legs better than other common clothing materials. Ballistic nylon is a thick and sturdy synthetic fabric. It is used because of its strength and abrasion resistance.

Cordura is the brand name for several textiles, including ballistic nylon manufactured by DuPont. Gore-Tex is a breathable and waterproof material often used in all-weather motorcycle gear. Leather is, of course, made from cured cow skin. It provides higher abrasion resistance than almost any other material leading to its popularity in motorcycle gear.

Being constructed of a superior abrasion-resistant material isn’t enough. The thread used to stitch the seams together must also be strong enough to withstand a slide on the road. If it is not, your pants might split open, leaving behind a nasty case of road rash. Pay attention to the Denier rating of the threads used to keep your pants together. Some manufacturers use double stitching to increase seam strength, as well.

Motorcycle pants have the specific task to keep the wearer safe and comfortable while riding. Therefore, the fit for these types of pants will be different than your heading out on the town clothes. Finding the correct fit is extremely important.

Some pants are designed as overpants, which means they can be worn over another pair of pants. Overpants should be looser to accommodate the extra layer of clothing beneath them. Most motorcycle pants have built-in adjustments to tighten or loosen the fit at the waist and ankles.

Some pants have additional adjustments for height. If, after utilizing these included alterations, the pants still don’t fit right, then you need to get another size pants. The pads and armor won’t protect the areas they are designed to protect if they aren’t located in those areas because of a poor fit.

Men’s pants will often not fit women well. Unisex pants are more accommodating the extra hip-width women have. However, motorcycle pants designed especially for women, will provide the best fit.
